Christiansen, Lucas, Escher

I was going to be clever and somehow title this with a nice long word starting with "I" followed by a farm animal like the last two posts, but that didn't work out so well. Relevant words failed me.

"I think it's in my basement. Let me go upstairs and check." -M.C. Escher

It's something like an anxiety dream just imagining the genius behind Lego, the filmmaker who changed the medium, and the artist of impossibilities together in a room. Add an additional four points of gravitation to this room, and the dream comes closer to a nightmare.
Such is state of a recently finished rehashing of an old Lego concept of mine. I had built a model of M.C. Escher's Relativity print in the Lego Star Wars theme back in 2010. In fact, I'm nearly certain there is an image of it on this blog. Back in January, I started sketching and reconstructing the model as a significantly larger, cleaner, and more detailed diorama. What you see below is that finished effort. Being a Star Wars fan, a Lego fan, and an art fan, the project was inevitable. Featuring characters and scenes from the 1977-83 original Star Wars trilogy, the model is fully lit from the interior, and measures in at about one cubed foot. Almost six months and a lighter piggy bank later, the planning has paid off. Below are Escher's original print, my replication, and a view of the whole diorama.
